TotR: Dream Race

Join us on today’s Tuesdays on the Run linkup with Patty from My No-Guilt Life, Erika from MCM Mama Runs and me.  Today we’re all about sitting back, putting your feet up and dreaming a little.  If money, time, race lotteries and distance were no object, what would your dream race be?

I have a whole lot of races on my wish list (here) and it’s tough to narrow it down to my one dream race!  I mean, Wales, Scotland, Yellowstone, Alaska, China…  Combining running and travel is my idea of perfection!

Dream RaceIf I could pick just one, it would probably be the Safaricom Marathon in Kenya in June.  This race is a dream race because:

  • Hello, it’s in Africa!  Kenya to be specific.  I would love to be able to travel to every continent and the beauty of Africa would be amazing to experience in person.
  • It’s a full marathon.  While I’m dreaming, I’d love to be able to run a full marathon!  They do have a half marathon option too.
  • All of the lodging options are camping, from very basic to deluxe.  Firefox_Screenshot_2015-03-28T19-14-47.096Z
  • They have lots of wildlife.  In fact, they may have too much wildlife.  But I love this disclosure.  Firefox_Screenshot_2015-03-28T19-20-37.464Z
  • It supports the Lewa Wildlife Conservancy in northern Kenya.

There are so many races I’d love to run, scattered around the world and it was hard to pick just one, but the scenery, charity supported and opportunity to visit another continent pushed this one to the top of my list!

  1. Wow that sounds like an awesome experience! It would be like a safari race! My current dream race is a little (okay, a lot) more local, the Pumpkinman Triathlon in Maine, because who wouldn’t want a Thanksgiving-like feast after a race?!

    • I really really want to visit Maine! I haven’t heard of that specific race, but I love how gorgeous that area looks!

    • The armed rangers both freak me out and give me comfort that nothing is going to mess with us! It would be so awesome to get to see African wildlife while running!

    • I do have a habit of dreaming big! 🙂 Rim to Rim is a huge dream/goal of mine! When Eli gets big enough for a long car trip, we’re definitely heading back to the Grand Canyon to tackle that hike!

    • Oh my, a Nessie race in Scotland!!! How awesome! My best friend and I took a girls trip there about six years ago and it was beautiful! I’d love to go back.

    • I am SURE I’d have to stop all the time for photos! Africa is such a beautiful country, I really hope to make it there one day.

    • There are some amazing places to race out there! Now to find a bucket of money somewhere! 😉

    • Thanks! I am sure I’d be totally freaked out, but I’d make myself get over it!

    • The runners in my local races are crazy fast, so I figure it will be pretty similar, LOL! 🙂

    • I think the animal warnings are what make this so exciting!

  2. Having read about the Kenya race, I can understand why it would be at the top of your list. We also love to travel and unfortunately I was not a runner when we lived in England. However, two overseas races are on my resume, one in London (in Regents Park for charity) and the Dublin Rock ‘n Roll. My most cool running experience was running in Nairobi with a Kenyan!

  4. How WILD would a marathon in Africa be April? Safari, camping, and running adventure all rolled into one! I can’t wait for the Disneyland Paris Half- after that, the world. 😉 Thanks again for TOTR.

    • It looks like such an amazing experience all around! Best wishes for Disneyland Paris, I’m sure it will be a gorgeous race!

    • Thanks! My top dream races are all ones with amazing vistas!
